About Furiganascan
Short answer
Furiganascan is an independent personal project that helps Japanese learners read text from manga, games and video frames. A screenshot scan returns the text with furigana, word meanings, grammar notes and a translation. Browser converters for furigana, hiragana, romaji and verb forms are free and have no limit.
What it does
The site has two parts. The first is a screenshot scan. You upload or paste an image, and an AI vision model reads the Japanese text, then returns the lines, furigana, a table of words with readings and meanings, a few grammar notes and an English translation. The second part is a set of converters that run entirely in your browser: furigana, kanji to hiragana, Japanese to romaji, romaji to hiragana, hiragana to romaji, a verb conjugator and a sentence breakdown.
How it works
Scans are sent to AI vision models through OpenRouter. Images are shrunk in your browser first, processed in memory and not stored. The converters use kuromoji, an open-source Japanese morphological analyzer licensed under Apache-2.0, together with its dictionary derived from IPADIC. The dictionary is about 17 MB and is downloaded once and cached by your browser. Romaji, kana and conjugation rules are our own code. The daily limit and the check against bots are handled by a small server on Cloudflare. The privacy page describes exactly what is logged.
Who runs it
Furiganascan is an independent personal project, built and maintained by one person with an interest in tools for language learners. It is not affiliated with any publisher, game studio, dictionary or AI company. There is no team page because there is no team.
Limits you should know
The AI scan can make mistakes with small, stylized or vertical text, and readings of names can be wrong in both the scan and the converters. Treat results as study aids. Free use is 3 scans a day per visitor, see pricing. To reach us, see contact.
